Snow Problem: a Guide to Portland Travel
June 4th, 2011Through most of the year, Portland, Oregon, is blessed to have a mild climate. This climate has helped make Portland a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and literature and coffee aficionados. However, there are times when this beautiful climate turns cold, bringing an abundance of snow and a certain sense of danger along with it. Traveling in Portland during these conditions can be hazardous, but it doesn’t have to be.
Portland still offers great outdoors activities such as hiking during the winter months. To get to some of the better hiking spots, people have to travel a ways from the city. There have been times when, while hiking, a snowstorm hits and leaves the roads leading out of the woods impassable for most vehicles. Here’s a list of some simple items to protect anyone who’s stranded.
1. Watch the weather and use the appropriate snow tires for your vehicle if entering high risk snow areas.
2. Always bring water. Bring enough to hydrate while hiking as well as extra for possible emergencies.
3. Bring along some high energy food, like fruits, nuts, or energy bars to keep your energy and morale up.
4. Fill the trunk with blankets and a spare set of clothing to keep you warm and dry.
5. Bring brightly colored tape to wrap around branches, which help the search and rescue teams spot stranded travelers.
Following these simple tips will ensure that travel in Portland during winter weather is safe.
