Through most of the year, Portland, Oregon, is blessed to have a mild climate. This climate has helped make Portland a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and literature and coffee aficionados. However, there are times when this beautiful climate turns cold, bringing an abundance of snow and a certain sense of danger along with it. Traveling in Portland during these conditions can be hazardous, but it doesn’t have to be.

Portland still offers great outdoors activities such as hiking during the winter months. To get to some of the better hiking spots, people have to travel a ways from the city. There have been times when, while hiking, a snowstorm hits and leaves the roads leading out of the woods impassable for most vehicles. Here’s a list of some simple items to protect anyone who’s stranded.

1. Watch the weather and use the appropriate snow tires for your vehicle if entering high risk snow areas.

2. Always bring water. Bring enough to hydrate while hiking as well as extra for possible emergencies.

3. Bring along some high energy food, like fruits, nuts, or energy bars to keep your energy and morale up.

4. Fill the trunk with blankets and a spare set of clothing to keep you warm and dry.

5. Bring brightly colored tape to wrap around branches, which help the search and rescue teams spot stranded travelers.

Following these simple tips will ensure that travel in Portland during winter weather is safe.

The majority of “Portland’s Top 10 Must See Sites” are located on the west side of the Willamette River. Several of these sites are located within the same property.

Washington Park includes 400 acres of trees. Offers tranquility and hiking. Within this park, the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan exists. Next the Rose Garden, bursting with roses, displayed on over ten thousand bushes with 500 species.

Nearby, the Oregon Zoo beckons visitors to visit 260 species of animals, with over 20 considered endangered.

The Chinese Garden, where on entering, a feeling of being in paradise lasts until exiting the garden gate. Close by the Pittock Mansion with 22 rooms located on 26 acres, and constructed in the early 1800′s, deserves being on the must see list also.

Visit the Pearl District, an international leader in urban renewal, featuring arts, restaurants, shopping. Browse Powell’s Books, located in the Pearl area with over an acre of floor space, and covering an entire city block.

Cross the river: Board the yacht “Portland Spirit,” for a cruise along the waterfront before visiting OMSI, and the “Lost Egypt” exhibit.

Most of Portland’s top ten sites, open daily except for a few holiday closures.

As there are lots of untoward incidences happening these days in the neighborhoods, it is necessary that we take some extra precaution and must start this from our own homes. We are going to discuss some important tips that can assist you in getting the suitable home security device from the market. If you can get a best security system for your house, then you can be rest assured it will keep you and your family safe for all times to come.

We are discussing below some of the best Home Security Systems which you can buy as per your requirement and budget:

Action detectors: Action detectors are programmed to sense the movements. They can be employed outdoors for setting up motion of lights or some other indication mechanism to inform you that somebody has gained unlawful entry in your assets.

Alarm buttons: You can press the alarm button in case of any emergency for activating a button alarm. Many models of such a system will have a holdup to allow the owner to turn off this button so as to prevent it from mechanically activating each time he goes inside the house.

Glass break sensor: These are superb security devices that get activated when somebody shatters your glass pane.

Protection cameras: When such cameras are positioned at strategic location, and record all activities in their
command area. Whenever anybody breaches the security, they make the recording of the entire episode and this helps in nabbing the culprit later on.

Portland has had a thriving music scene with its own unique sound ever since the 1960s, when garage rock groups The Kingsmen and Paul Revere & the Raiders first came to prominence. Since then, Portland has hosted important groups in punk rock, bluegrass, and world music, sometimes even combining aspects together. It’s no surprise that there are plenty of places to catch a show. Here are a few of the best.

The Aladdin Theater has been around since the ’20s, when it hosted vaudeville legends like Jack Benny. Since then it has gone through a number of incarnations. In 1993 it was restored to a hall hosting the best in modern music from all corners of the globe.

The Crystal Ballroom also has a long history, with its origins in 1914. In the 1960s, it was a haven for the most modern rock stars, including Little Richard. There is a rumor that he fired Jimi Hendrix in the middle of a performance there, but whether that’s true or not, the ballroom continues to thrill with its special energy.

The Wonder Ballroom was constructed in 1914, and its unique charm has survived until today. With a capacity of 778 people, it’s a blend of intimacy and crowd-pleasing that hosts hometown heroes like Quasi along with out-of-towners. In October, Chapel Hill group Superchunk takes the stage along with Teenage Fanclub.

The Doug Fir is an example of beauty before age. It was founded in 2004, but its dcor harkens back to the 50s. The Fir is as renowned for its food as its music. Popular menu items include the Idaho Crunchy Trout, Smoked Draper Valley Turkey, and the Fir Burger.

Portland’s climate combines warm summers and rainy winters, never dipping too far down on the thermometer. This makes it a perfect site for rose gardens, which led to the city’s nickname a century ago. Visitors to the city will not want to miss the International Rose Test Garden, the oldest still-operating garden in the country. The garden was founded in 1917 by Jesse A. Curry, the editor of the Oregon Journal. This site served as protection for the roses recovered from Europe during the first World War. Starting in 1919 Portland began to offer gold medals for the best new variety, and in 1996 the Portland’s Best Rose award was installed. This award is judged by rose experts from around the world. When visiting the Test Garden, it’s helpful to have a plan in mind, since the site is spread over 4.5 acres with over 7,000 roses. There are three sub-gardens to help you organize your trip. The Royal Rosarian Garden honors the Rosarian group of Portland, which knights members in under the name of their favorite rose. This group helps represent the spirit of Portland to the wider world. This garden contains some roses which are no longer available on the commercial market. The Shakespeare Garden was started in 1945 and originally only included plants from Shakespeare’s plays. However, certain plants had to be moved to sunnier areas because of the shade of the nearby trees. In the middle of the garden is a commemorative Shakespeare plaque, with the line, “Of all flowers methinks a rose is best,” from his play The Two Noble Kinsmen. Finally, there is the Miniature Rose Garden, which displays the winners of the American Rose Society and All-America Rose Selection annual contests. It is also one of six sites in the country for the ARS miniature rose test program.

Portland is well known for its love and respect for fine brewing. How well known? As far back as 1887, brewer Henry Weinhard offered to supply the local Skidmore Fountain with free beer instead of water. Today, the Weinhard tradition is carried on in brewers like the McMenamin brothers, Mike and Brian. In 1974 they opened the Produce Row Caf, and in 1985 established the first Oregon brewery since the end of Prohibition. Now, the McMenamins have more than fifty locations across Oregon, and some in Washington, as well. Of those, 24 are breweries, with a menu of over 200 recipes. As brewers, McMenamins is dedicated to the environment, with a strong focus on recycling at each individual pub. The brewing process itself is also environmentally sound, with all of the natural waste products going back into the earth.Visitors to McMenamins have many options. They can simply enjoy the food and drink at one of the many locations, like the historical Barley Mill Pub. McMenamins also has the ongoing Great Northwest Music Tour, in which a different artist plays at its venues each month. For July, it’s the Freak Mountain Ramblers, playing a blend of country and rock ‘n’ roll sure to win over fans. There are, of course, also a variety of beer festivals. The Hillsdale and Olympic Brewfests have already passed, along with the Thompson Barley Cup, but the 9th Annual Roadhouse Brewfest is coming up on July 17. Celebrating Oregon Craft Beer Month, the festival presents a family-friendly atmosphere and a chance to get to know the men behind the brewing vats. There is plenty of music here as well. If you’ve been waiting for a chance to visit Portland, this summer could be the best one yet.

Berbati’s Pan & Restaurant: Berbati’s provides authentic Greek cuisine courtesy of the Papaioannou brothers. The menu includes pita pizzas in Greek, Chicken Alfredo, and Margarita varieties, and of course perfectly grilled gyros. Berbati’s is also dedicated to encouraging art and music, so there’ll probably be something on display during your meal.

McCormick & Schmick’s Harborside: This eatery offers hometown seafood favorites with a touch of class. Their specialties include stuffed salmon, rainbow trout, and wild sea scallops. For the landlubbers, there are delicious steak, chicken, and pork dishes.
Red Star Tavern & Roast House: This traditional American tavern is run by Chef Thomas Dunklin, who was tutored under Emeril Lagasse himself.

Portland is well-known for its musical culture and other alternative movements. While you will find everything from punk rockers to naked bike riders, one of the things everybody agrees on is the importance of taking care of the environment. Popular Science calls Portland the greenest city in America, coming in ahead of San Francisco and Boston. The city’s energy source is 50 renewable, and about of commuters take a bike, carpool, or use public transportation. The DIY culture is also an important aspect of the city’s high rank. Rather than buying from large, wasteful chain stores, Portland offers residents and visitors alike many venues for taking things into their own hands. For example, Bolt Fabric Boutique sponsors classes from Beginning Patternmaking to Adult Zippered Hoodies. Small publishers are also supported by zine distributors like Microcosm, which publishes everything from political commentary to music reviews in order to make people care more about the world around them.Tourists with an eye for the environment will also be interested in Portland’s sewer system, which cuts water pollution using elements like gutters and planted barriers to absorb rainwater. The Portland website offers a map of the most interesting locations for green visitors looking to get their feet wet. Homeowners in the city are helping out by disconnecting their downspouts from the storm-water system and instead using rain gardens and barrels.Portland Walking Tours are the most eco-friendly way to travel the city, and you can catch a guided one every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. USA Today calls it one of the top 5 walking tours in the nation, and includes locations like the world’s smallest park, which was built as a leprechaun colony in 1948. Talk about staying green!
